"
Batteries last a long time. The thing turns itself off after many minutes. Stays on just long enough for my daughter to fall sleep. When the batteries get low only the lighter colors show up, orange and yellow not red. There is an optional extra power adapter available."

We bought this for my 4 yr old's birthday. She loves it! She calls it her rainbow maker and sleeps with it. It is very lightweight and feels cheap, but I don't mean that as a bad thing. It WAS inexpensive, and if it were heavier I'm afraid it wouldn't be surviving at my house. My 2 yr old has thrown it a few times, and they carry it all over the house. They've taken off the "mirror", a mylar strip (so nothing that shatters), several times but I've put it back on. I may glue it. It's just held in by tabs on the ends. It could be considered a choking hazzard. My kids have also rubbed off some of the mirror, but it still works. I wouldn't consider this toy educational, though. It's just a cool LED nightlight basically. I still give this a 5 star rating, because I feel like we got what we paid for. My kids LOVE it, and I just realize nothing lasts forever around my house."

My daughter (4) no longer needs to sleep with a night light in her room. She's convinced that all the beautiful colors in her rainbow chase away bad dreams. I love that it stays on 10 mins. That's just long enough for her to fall asleep and there's no drain on the batteries. We also have "Moon in my Room" another Uncle Milton toy, for my son. We love these products."

Way back in primary school I had gotten one of these at a 'Discovery' Store -
being the nerd [and I use that term VERY affectionately :)] that I was, this was
the coolest thing since my first microscope. Over the years, treasured as it was,
the rainbow projector was lost amongst the various things I accumulated...
Last year I had found it on Amazon, and promptly ordered it!
I can honestly say I felt the same joy and awe again that I had experienced as a child.
I love curling up with my cats and a cup of tea and just watching it -
My birds love it too, and my Scarlet Macaw positively adores it!
I've just purchased another one for the down-stairs and can't wait until it arrives :)
I'd say it's iffy in terms of being educational, unless of course you get into the whole
light refraction / visible spectrum thing(?) It's very stimulating mentally however!
On terms of durability - I take caution to an extreme with my larger birds, but other
than that I'd suppose it would hold up well against a moderately destructive toddler.
Over all, it's a fantastic little thing to have; for the young scientist or the young at heart,
although it may not be practical, it's still a simple something that's enjoyable.

But it's not the brightest light ever, more intended as a night-light function than anything else. Be warned, I bought this for a friend of mine, and upon opening the box I felt quite silly. I had thought that there would be an AC adapter included, there was not. Luckily someone had some batteries out in their car so we were able to have some rainbow-y fun fairly soon after.
Also, there's no motion in the toy itself, so it's a stationary rainbow on the wall/ceiling. It's a cute toy, worth $20, but not ground-breaking stuff here."
